The goal of the preparation therapy is to eliminate all or some of the cancerous cells within your body, and she will also prepare your bone marrow and the immune system to be transplanted. 5 stages for transplantation

The process of transplantation consists of five phases, namely:

Preparatory Therapy

The period that runs from the beginning of the transplant to the time of engraftment

The time from the day of engraftment until when discharge day arrives.

Convalescence in the early stages

Stages and dates are approximate, and similar stages can overlap a little. The timing of the process of transplantation is distinct for each patient.

Before chemotherapy, there are many security checks to ensure that everything is carried out correctly. Following the safety checks, your nurse will provide you with intravenous fluids (to stop dehydration) and anti-nausea medicine and chemotherapy via an inserted catheter (see Figure 4.).

Radiotherapy

The treatment is given before transplantation typically includes total body radiation (TBI). In TBI, small doses of radiation can affect the whole body. Suppose your transplant physician advises you to undergo radiotherapy as part of the preparation therapy. In that case, it is recommended that you consult a radiation specialist before being admitted to the hospital. The doctor will inform you about this procedure and take specific tests of your body to ensure that the treatment is effective and safe for you. The doctor is also responsible for prescribing the appropriate dosage of radiation.

The doses will be given three times each day or for four days. Each session will last from 10-15 minutes. The radiation therapy procedure is similar to the x-rays, and the procedure is not associated with discomfort.

There may be a need for stimulation (additional radiotherapy) for other areas within your body. Treatment is based on your specific condition. The doctor who performed your transplant and the radiation oncologist provides an extensive treatment program.

If you're a man who has lymphoma or leukaemia, you could be offered additional treatment for your testicles. This is to kill cancerous cells that could be present in the organ.

Things to Remember

Don't wear jewellery during therapy sessions. The metal could affect the amount of radiation absorbed in the area.

Do not use any lotions, creams, oils, or deodorants (even Lip balms such as ChapStick (r) ) 2 days before starting radiotherapy. Avoid using these products during the period of radiotherapy. It is possible to use Aquaphor (r) Moisturizer but do not apply it more than 4 hours before the treatment.

Your family members could accompany you to sessions with therapists. They will be waiting in the waiting room, but they'll be able to view you on the screen and speak to you.
